What is your definition of art?
I think it's nearly impossible to define art for each individual because it means something to so many people. It is however a creative outlet for most. To me, art is making an expressive piece that allows me to slow down and think for awhile. I live in such a fast pace world that I don't get a lot of time for self reflection , however painting allows me to do that. One day it can mean putting my emotions out on the canvas, and other days it's just painting to blow off some steam and create something aesthetically pleasing.

Why are you interested in art?
I'm interested in art because it something that no one can really recreate and it's something that really meaningful to me. I can paint whatever I think and express an emotion or good memory to viewers. I think it's really relaxing but stimulates the creativity that I don't use often. Art is just something really complex because it has a lot of depth to it and everyone can perceive it differently. I'm not exactly sure why I'm interested in art but I do know that I really enjoy making it and taking pride in something I've created myself.

What types of art are you interested in?
This class has allowed me to explore a lot of different artist and painting styles and I've become very interested in artist like Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, J.W.M. Turner, Salvador Dali, and Gustav Klimt. Van Gogh can be perceived as a pretty cliche artist to like but I have gotten increasingly interested in his work and style techniques. A lot of my inspiration has come from his short and choppy brush strokes or great swirly skies. I really admire frida Kahlot and her work because of the way she conveys a message that she feels and is very unconventional. Some techniques I've really liked researching was fauvism and neo Impressionism. As for subjects and what to paint I've really enjoyed painting memories because I can use creativity to fill in the rest and recall good times. I've also liked painting very simple and aesthetically pleasing paintings for fun.

Which piece is the strongest?
I think my music painting is the strongest because not only did I use things like composition, shadowing, highlights, and new techniques like using saw dust in the paint, it had such a strong meaning that it shines to me. The painting was for the song "Dancing in the Moonlight" and although we were supposed to use water color I got the okay to use acrylic. This piece had great spacing and I felt like everything was in the right place. Plus I used techniques like background, middle ground, and foreground.

What skills did you work on with the project?
I worked on shadowing, item placement, and trying new materials to add texture. I tried shadowing with figures and where I think the light would emit light on the ground. I also made sure I filled the space and made the page "even". I also added saw dust into my sky paint to make it choppy and really draw attention to it. It was really fun to try new things like that and let loose with my painting style.

What was the message behind the painting?
My message was more of a memory or fond thought. It suppose to be a representation of the light my new friends have brought into my life. They're standing position and body shapes somewhat resemble my friends that I adore. And the music painting is one of my favorite songs that we listen to all the time and dance to. We like to stay up and dance until we are tired and it's just something that means a lot to me so I wanted other viewers to feel that too.

Why is it the strongest piece?
It's the strongest piece because of all the new techniques I worked on and accomplished. I tried a lot of new ideas and techniques before I put it down permanently so it advanced me as a painter. Plus it was something I really liked so I took a lot of pride and put effort and heart into it and I think you can see that.

What skills do you need to improve upon this upcoming semester?
I think I need to start working on finding more of my style so I can improve upon it and I'd like to become better using watercolor. I think that as a painter or you should be well rounded and so I want more practice using watercolor so I can try and branch out, but still improve my acrylic uses. And I want to try to fund a style best suited for me because it makes it easier to try and create more ideas.

Is there a project you would like to work on next semester?
I'm not sure exactly if I have anything specific I want to work on but I want to make more acrylic paintings, preferably things that I can take it in any direction.
