Semester One
Gray Scale, Still Life Painting (Watercolor)
This is the gray scale, still life painting only using water color. This project was tricky because it required us to mix colors like blue and orange to try and achieve a gray color. We were not allowed to use any black paint. Even though I struggled with this painting it taught me a lot of control because I had to paint what I saw and not what I thought or imagined. This taught me to use highlights and shadows and use of composition with the placement of items.
Music Painting (Acrylic)
This painting was for my music painting. It was supposed to be a creation of a memory, feeling, or symbol of a song that means a lot to us. Without even thinking I knew I had to do King Harvests "Dancing In The Moonlight". That song means a lot to me because it reminds me of all the great times with some of the greatest people I've ever met. The two figurines in my painting are supposed to be my friends and I tried to portray their personalities in their positioning. This painting was my favorite to do because I put saw dust in the blue paint and so it created a really chunky and textured pattern and really draws the viewer to it. I also really like the shadowing on my figures and how they glow in the scene. I think this is one of my strongest pieces because I had a lot of passion and excitement when doing this. It has a lot of symbolism and different characteristics to it. I also really like the composition because I don't feel as though it's cluttered but there's no pointless space left over.
Independent Painting (Acrylic)
This painting was done on my own for our independent painting. We had a list of topics or we could make up our own. I kind of went off on my own and did something that represents myself and basically things I've been experiencing lately. I used all acrylic paint and I've really loved using it for most of my paintings. In the center I have the Buddhist head and lotus flower. I could've done a lot better making everything more aligned and symmetrical but I free handed it all so it made it difficult. I incorporated patterns to add more to it and the koi fish. The koi fish represent overcoming adversity and I made the colors to be soothing however powerful to the viewer.
Non-objective Painting (Acrylic)
This was an acrylic non objective painting. This is not my favorite painting ever ever done but I learned a lot from it. I learned a lot about composition and color coordination because I mixed some pretty difficult colors. I learned about composition of a painting because in order to make the painting look good I had to make some symmetrical shapes or marks and had to fill the space without cluttering it. This painting also taught me about letting loose and trying new techniques like using cardboard to make swirls. I tried new things and didn't plan everything out which was frustrating but also really fun.
Semester Two Paintings and Encaustics
Portrait of Emily (Acrylic)
Let me start off by saying how this painting doesn't represent my skills level, but my effort and work ethic. This painting started off great, the sketch looked fantastic and I was ready to roll. The paint I was using was tempera paint. This paint was difficult because it dried really fast and was much different than acrylic. As I began to paint I noticed the skin tone was completely off. That began a domino effect of problems. I ended up using acrylic paint which was probably the best choice for my sanity and her skin tone. I feel like I had such a rough start that it threw off the rest of the painting and consequently left me feeling unhappy about it. However I powered through and I'm really glad I finished it but this was by far the most troubling and worst painting I did this semester. Because of this, I want to paint another portrait to really work on those skills.
History of Punk Rock (Encaustic)
This piece was really fun to make and it was centered around the history of something or someone. I chose to kind of represent my dad in this piece and was inspired by his love for old punk rock music. He has always influenced me with music so I thought this would be a really cool piece. I used a photo collage of bands like the Ramones, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, and other bands. Then I put an old guitar made with the encaustics. It was a tricky matieral to work with but in the end it was really fun and it's nice to be well rounded in certain matieral.
Double-tap to edit.
This painting was by far my favorite painting ever. This painting showed composition, craftsmanship, and identity which was my focus. I used Frida Kahlo as my inspiration to portray my identity in this piece. Her artwork and lifestyle has always had a seminal impact on me. She is a free spirit and a woman who creates her own idea of what feminism and beauty is. I portray that in my own life with my unique look that comes from my Mexican side of the family. I put emphasis on my dark features and unibrow but have my light skin to contradict it. Another way I put identity in my painting and channeled my inner Frida was putting flowers in my hair. I absolutely love nature and it's my passion in life to change the health of the environment so that's why I incorporated large leaves and vines and earthy tones. I think I did a good job displaying how my personality is rooted within nature and being down to earth. This painting was done with acrylic and I was really content with how it turned out.

This painting didn't really show off my artistic ability but it was really fun to make. I experimented with symbolism and new patterns and colors. I tried a type of tie dye pattern. I used the om symbol because it means a lot to me in my yoga and meditation. It represents self being and universal knowledge. I tried to make it a very aesthetically pleasing painting. I used acrylic paint and actually used a combination of paint brushes and my hands for this piece.
